District Cooking Competitions

Date: 1st Mar 2026 Author: Martin Asling

On Saturday 28th February, Scouts and Cubs from across the District gathered for an exciting afternoon of food, flavour and friendly competition at the District Scout & Cub Cooking Competition, hosted by 13th Halifax St Matthew’s Northowram.

The event challenged young people to plan, prepare and present two-course menus within a set time, putting their teamwork, organisation and cooking skills to the test.

The Cubs were tasked with creating a two-course Healthy Eating menu. The standard was exceptionally high, with teams producing colourful, well-balanced dishes that demonstrated a clear understanding of nutrition as well as creativity in presentation. Judges were impressed by the thought that had gone into ingredient choices and the confidence shown in the kitchen.

The Scouts took on a two-course Street Food theme, delivering bold flavours and imaginative menus inspired by global cuisine. The hall was filled with fantastic aromas as teams worked with focus and determination to produce dishes that looked and tasted the part.

Chef Justin joined the event as guest judge, providing professional feedback and encouragement throughout the afternoon. His expertise added real value to the experience and helped make the competition even more memorable for those taking part.

Congratulations to the winning teams from 35th Halifax All Saints. The Cubs impressed with their Prawn Pasta and Fruit Kebabs, while the Scouts secured their win with a Chicken Burger and Halwa. Both teams demonstrated excellent teamwork, skill and presentation to earn their titles.

The competition showcased exactly what Scouting is about — building confidence, developing practical life skills and encouraging young people to challenge themselves in a supportive environment. A huge thank you goes to 13th Halifax St Matthew’s Northowram for hosting, to Chef Justin for judging, and to all the leaders and volunteers who helped make the event such a success.

It was a fantastic afternoon celebrating talent, teamwork and skills for life across the District.
